Dave Saunders

Dave Saunders. Copyright Nancy JafferBorn: Sept. 26, 1952

Residence: Morriston, Fla.

The former coachman of Great Britain's Queen Elizabeth, David was involved in the early days of organized combined driving as an employee of the Queen's husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who led the way in development of the sport.

David represented Great Britain in the first WEG in 1990, two years after winning the British National Championship. An American citizen since 2001, now he's hoping to be one of the nine U.S. representatives at the WEG.

In contrast to the warmbloods that dominate this sport at the highest level, his equine partners are all-American Morgans, owned by Alan and Maureen Aulson of the Black Prong Equestrian Center in Bronson, Fla.

A licensed U.S. Equestrian Federation and FEI steward, David also is an American Driving Society judge in coaching.

DiscoverHorses.com Columnist Nancy Jaffer's WEG Preview:

David is making his WEG bid on a shoestring budget, with no individual or corporate sponsorship, using borrowed horses, truck and trailer and just one full-time assistant. He invites more support, but meanwhile, his determination, experience and ability makes him likely to be one of the USA's individual competitors at the WEG.
